Dual Language: Two-Way Immersion in Palm Beach County refers to teaching and learning in two languages. It develops bilingualism, biculturalism, and biliteracy. Two-Way Immersion supports two groups of students. Students whose primary language is Spanish and those whose primary language is English. They learn together in both languages. The benefits of Two-Way Immersion are as follows:
- Academic Achievement in Spanish and English - Immersion students typically demonstrate increased attention control, better memory, and superior problem solving skills. Research shows Immersion students perform as well as or better than non-immersion students on standardized tests.
- Bilingualism and Biliteracy - Students develop a high level of oral and written proficiency in both Spanish and English. Immersion students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where second language is an asset.
- Multicultural Awareness and Sensitivity - Students develop and demonstrate positive cross cultural attitudes towards other languages and cultures.
In Palm Beach County we currently have 19 elementary, 5 middle and 2 high schools that offer the Dual Language Program.
