Free supper at selected schools

We are happy to be able to provide a supper meal for children who are in selected afterschool programs. The afterschool meal program serves meals that meet the nutritional needs of children and are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered by the Department of Health, Bureau of Child Care Food Programs, is designed to provide a nutritious meal to children in after school programs. It is available to schools in which at least 50% of the enrolled children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals and were regularly scheduled educational and enrichment activities are structured and supervised.

It was our goal to offer a program that provided a well-balanced supper meal for children needed at this critical stage of growth. The program was piloted in four schools during the 2014-2015 school year where over 50,000 meals were served to students attending afterschool programs.

In 2015-2016 our department reached out to principals whose schools qualified with a Free and Reduced participation of 50% or greater. An additional 16 schools were added to the original 4 pilot schools from last year. A total number of 337,700 supper meals were served. In addition to that number, 335 Saturday lunch meals and 1071 Saturday Snacks were served at two schools that offered students Saturday tutorial programs.

This year in 2016-2017 an additional 23 schools were added, bring the total number of supper programs operating in our District to 43 schools.
