Home Education Using Virtual Courses

Palm Beach Virtual School offers courses on an individual basis during the traditional school year calendar (August to May). In Home Education status, the parent chooses the educational path. PBVS is the School District of Palm Beach County's in-district option for secondary virtual courses (6-12), available through two accredited platforms: PBVS Franchise in FLVS® Flex and Edgenuity Virtual Academy (EVA).

While students cannot earn a high school diploma in Home Education status, all credits earned can be applied toward grade promotion and diploma requirements if the student enrolls in a diploma-granting program (building school or full-time virtual) in the future.

Step 1: Enter Home Education Status

Before enrolling in virtual courses, you must first establish Home Education status with the district:

Florida Scholarship Recipients: Be aware if a Home Education student is approved for and receiving a Personalized Education Program (PEP) or Educational Options (EO) Scholarship through Florida’s Step Up For Students, they may not be enrolled as a Home Education student with the local school district. Please contact your Scholarship Funding Organization (SFO) for self-pay options.

Step 2: Choose Your Curriculum Option - Secondary grades 6-12

Option A: PBVS Franchise (FLVS Flex Platform)

Best For: Students who prefer to self-navigate lessons and discuss content with a teacher through Discussion-Based Assessments.
Teacher Support: Taught by Palm Beach County district teachers using the flex platform.

Enrollment Steps:

  • Follow the Step-by-Step Franchise Enrollment Instructions.
  • Create a student account through the Enroll Now link on the County Virtual School Enrollment page as a Home Education student.
  • Select District: Palm Beach | School: Home Education | Physical School: Home Education.
  • Parent/Guardian Approval Required: You must create a parent account, upload proof of residency, and verify/approve your child's course requests through your parent account. Click here for parent account instructions and proof of residency instructions.
  • Student Survey Required: All students are required to complete the FLVS Student Wellness, Safety, and Discipline Survey. Students must log in to their Flex account and locate the red bar at the top of the page - click the + sign and find the link to complete.

Option B: PBVS Edgenuity Virtual Academy (EVA)

Best For: Students who prefer video-recorded teacher instruction and a structured learning path with built-in supports like translation, read-aloud, and guided notes.
Teacher Support: Taught by Edgenuity Imagine Learning teachers; program administered through Palm Beach Virtual School.

Enrollment Steps:

  • Follow the Step-by-Step EVA Enrollment Instructions.
  • Create a student account through the Palm Beach Virtual - Student Account Creation page as a Home Education student.
  • Select District Program: Home Education (IS).
  • Complete required fields (highlighted in yellow): Select Home Education (IS) for School Information, refer to the student for Basic Information & Contact Information, and provide parent/guardian information in the Guardians Section.
  • Course Approval: The Home Education office will approve your child's course requests.

Step 3: Plan Your Course Path

You, as the parent, choose which courses your child takes. Use these academic planning guides:

Course Load Options: Home Education virtual students can take 1 to 6 classes per semester.

Grading & Credits: A grade is issued upon completion of each semester. To complete a full year of a course, students complete both semesters. While students cannot earn a high school diploma in Home Education status, all credits earned can be applied toward grade promotion and diploma requirements if the student enrolls in a diploma-granting program (building school or full-time virtual) in the future.

Important Information

  • Statewide Testing: Home Education virtual students are not required to participate in statewide testing (EOC, FAST, etc.). However, you may choose to have your child participate by coordinating with the Home Education department. For more information, visit the Information on Optional Statewide Testing page.
  • Annual Evaluation: An Annual Evaluation is required in Home Education status. Virtual course transcripts reports can be submitted. Follow the steps on the Home Education Annual Evaluations site to submit no later than the anniversary of a student's registration date in home education per Florida Statutes and School Board Policy 8.14.
