Career Information

School Bus Driver applicants must successfully complete a comprehensive screening, training, and testing process as required by Federal, State and Local regulations prior to achieving certification to transport students.  School bus drivers work an average of 7-1/2 hours per day and are eligible for benefits. Effective January 2016, the starting pay rate for the School District Palm Beach County Transportation School Bus Drivers is $14.00 per hour.

School Bus Driver Training Course

CDL Training includes (40) hours of classroom instruction and on the road training.  A minimum of twenty (20) hours of classroom instruction and eight (8) hours behind the wheel training are required, based on the Department of Education’s Basic School Bus Driver Curriculum.  This course includes a CDL training and testing class.  After successful completion of all requirements, the driver will be assigned to one of the six (6) Transportation Facility Centers.

Hiring Procedures for School Bus Drivers 

a.    Applicants must possess a valid Florida driver’s license with a minimum of 5 years licensed driving experience.

b.    Applicants must have a good driving record

c.    Applicants must be  able to clearly communicate in English, both oral and written form

d.    Applicants must be  able to pass: a Level II Background Screening, Dexterity Test, DOT Physical, and Pre-employment Drug Screening.

e.    Applicants selected will need to submit three (3) Employment References:

f.    The driving record of all applicants will be reviewed for infractions through the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and (DHSMV).

g.    Department of Transportation will conduct an orientation of training requirements and expectations for prospective school bus drivers and bus attendants.

h.    All applicants must submit to Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse testing prior to becoming an employee with The School District of Palm Beach County Transportation Department. Once employed, random testing of all school bus drivers and bus attendants will be required as outlined by the Omnibus Transportation Employees Testing Act (OTETA).

i.    All applicants are subject to criminal background checks which requires fingerprinting.

j.    A physical exam is required during the hiring process and consequently thereafter on an annual basis.
