    Freshmen Academy Orientation Presentation

    Aviation and Aerospace

    The Aviation and Aerospace program at West Boca Raton Community High School is designed to prepare students for a career in the aviation industry. The program immerses students in the latest cutting-edge technology in Aviation and Airport Management, including but not limited to; pilot knowledge, aerodynamic principles, airspace, weather, flight deck instruments, Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), radio communications, safety, and airport management. West Boca Raton Community High School has partnered with both the Boca Airport Authority and Lynn University to offer students a myriad of experience opportunities, dual high school and college credits, and practical aviation industry experience within the local community.

    Computer Science

    The Computer Science program is designed to meet the needs of highly motivated students who wish to major in one of the various fields within Computer Science industry. The program strives to provide college-bound students with rigorous learning opportunities in an environment rich in quality of instruction, hand-on experiences, and course offerings. Students acquire a well-rounded foundation in the basic aspects of computing to include but not be limited to programming, database programming, and algorithmic design, as well as mathematics and science.

    Culinary Arts

    The Culinary Arts program curriculum provides the opportunity for students to train for a variety of careers in the field of food service and preparation. Academic and technical studies are integrated, emphasizing and building proficiency in food production and cooking, cost control, nutrition and sanitation, and workplace safety. Practical work experience stresses sanitation and safety and includes quantity cooking, baking, menu development, and food preparation. School site restaurants and catering opportunities will further enhance front and back–of–the–house skills, as well as restaurant management.

    Drafting & Design

    The Drafting and Design program offers two distinct strands designed to challenge students with laboratory and classroom based curriculum which promotes the use of critical thinking and computer technology skills. The content and activities in these programs include entrepreneurship, safety, and leadership skills. In the Drafting courses of study, students employ the use of AutoCAD Computer Aided Design software for architectural, mechanical, and 3D projects. In the Communications Technology Strand, the study of the processes, uses, and technical skills found in visual technologies (both conventional and digital procedures), multimedia productions, computer animation and graphics, web page design, electronic media, and other new and emerging technologies will be incorporated. This program focuses on the understanding and demonstration of the technological tools, machines, instruments, materials, processes and systems in business and industry.

    Medical Sciences - Pre-Medicine

    The Medical Sciences Honors program offers an innovative, integrated learning environment designed to provide the student with the medical skills and training necessary to succeed in postsecondary healthcare career education and/or to successfully transition into the healthcare workforce. This comprehensive program combines a rigorous academic curriculum with intense clinical and laboratory experiences. Student clinical rotations are conducted at area hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Clinical clearance, including a background check and drug screening are required prior to entering the clinical setting. In the School District of Palm Beach County all medical courses provide local honors credit. Algebra I or Algebra I Honors is recommended.

    Performing Arts - Dance, Band, Vocal, Theatre

    Dance
    The Dance program offers rigorous instruction for the serious dance student. Dance enables students to develop an appreciation for the art of Dance through a holistic approach. Students learn about various dance styles, including Ballet, Modern, Jazz and Contemporary classes on a weekly basis, develop physical strength, flexibility & technical style, build a sense of self respect, peer collaboration & coordination, graceful coordination, balance & control of movements and most of all appreciate artistic growth.

    Music - Band
    Programs offering development of extensive study in sight-reading skills, improvisational skills, and performance techniques while encompassing various levels of music theory. More than twenty different student ensembles, ranging from classical to jazz, Marching and Drum line, rehearse and perform throughout the year. They perform at halftime shows during football games, pep rallies, various local parades, campus events and Band Competitions. Band students focus on the development of experiences in responding to music and connecting music to cultural influences are also a part of the overall course.

    Music - Vocal
    Students in the Vocal program develop a proper vocal technique and an understanding of vocal mechanism. Students will also learn musical notation, sight singing and appreciation of many genres of music through the study and performance of vocal literature. Students will also learn musical theory, arrangement, vocal and performance techniques, musical notation, sight –reading, structure & discipline. They will experience feelings of accomplishment and success like no other through creative expression, self- respect, peer collaboration and coordination most of all an appreciation for others' talent.

    Theatre - Acting
    The Acting track of the Theatre program challenges young artists to develop a passion and understanding of the art form. Students will focus on process-centered work, gaining a profound knowledge of who they are in the world both as artists and humans. Through a curriculum involving movement work, script analysis, scene study, Shakespeare, devised theater and directing, students will train to become competitive theater practitioners and storytellers.

    Theatre - Musical
    The Musical track of the Theatre program explores the practical skills needed for the artist seeking to study musical theatre on the collegiate level. Students study acting, singing, and dancing in tandem as the primary method of telling stories. Students will explore dance technique, musical theatre history, music theory & musicianship principles, present selections from their repertoire books, workshop material, work collaboratively as an ensemble, study current trends in the profession and, eventually, film college pre-screen auditions.

    Theatre - Technical
    The Technical track of the Theatre program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of all production elements of a show and offers hands-on training in all aspects of technical theatre construction and design of scenery, lighting, sound, and costume. Students can study stage management, arts administration, and prepare for leadership positions on crews and production teams.
