  • ESOL Students

Welcome to The Chuck Shaw Technical Educational Center ESOL Program. The goal of the ESOL program is to provide the opportunity for all students to acquire knowledge and develop English proficiency to succeed in life and work. Many of our ESOL students, after completing the program, continue their education by entering our GED program, and depending on their level, enter college.

    Ability Levels

Classes are divided into 6 ability levels from beginning literacy to academic English.  An assessment of the student's level of English proficiency is used for class placement. Speaking, reading, writing, and listening are the basis of instruction and practice. Students learn English through a variety of methods and materials. Small and large group activities are provided within each class for speaking, reading, writing, and listening instruction and practice.

    Registration

Chuck Shaw Technical Education Center has open enrollment, so students can start at different times during the term. Classes are scheduled year-round with the exception of a four-week break in the summer. To register for ESOL classes first, go to the main office with your official government photo ID and pay your tuition. After you pay your tuition, you will take your CASAS assessment test. After testing, you will be given a schedule and a start date.

    Class Time

Day ESOL classes meet Monday through Friday. Session I is from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM.  Session II is from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The evening classes meet Monday through Thursday.  Session III is from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

    Attendance

Regular attendance is important to promote student progress and assure a student's seat in class. There are ongoing assessments to monitor students' progress in their studies. After 70 hours of class instruction, the students are post-tested for academic gains. Students are placed in a class level based on standardized CASAS scores.

    The CASAS Test

The Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) is used for student placement and is completed on the computer. The results are an assessment of the student's level of English proficiency and is used for class placement.
