Atlantic Community High School’s Thespian Troupe 2609 announces its 2023-24 Theatre Season, featuring two theatrical productions.
Troupe 2609’s season opens in November with Game Show. Written by Jeffrey Finn and Bob Walton, Game Show takes place during a “live broadcast” of a fictional game show. The theatre audience becomes the studio audience, and members are picked to compete in the trivia game to win actual prizes. In addition to the “broadcast”, the audience witnesses the “behind the scenes” antics that take place during the “commercial breaks” of Game Show. Show dates are November 9, 10, and 11, 2023. In April, Troupe 2609 will stage The Color Purple. Based upon the novel written by Alice Walker and the Warner Bros./Amblin Entertainment motion picture, The Color Purple was adapted for the stage by Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. The 2016 Tony Award® Winner for Best Revival, The Color Purple is the epic story of Celie, a woman who beats all of the odds to find her inner strength. Show dates are April 26 and 27, 2024 and May 3 and 4, 2024. (The Color Purple flyer)
The ACHS Drama productions will be directed by Atlantic Community High School teacher, Julius Wynn, and the cast and crew include students from grades 9 to 12. Wynn states, “I’m thrilled about the shows for this year! They’re so different and will stretch the acting chops of the students. Game Show is a super fun show because the audience becomes a part of the show. It’ll be exciting seeing the kids do live improv as well as hearing the contestants answers to the trivia questions. The Color Purple is a classic story that has moved multiple generations of people. It is a story of sisterhood, hope, love, and survival. With a score featuring gospel, jazz, blues, and ragtime, The Color Purple will have audiences celebrating life and the world around us.”
The productions of Game Show and The Color Purple will be performed in the Auditorium at Atlantic Community High School, 2455 West Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33445. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children (4-17) and can now be purchased at https://atlantichighchool.seatyourself.biz.
