It was in 1974 when “The Wiz,” the reimagining of the classic “Wizard of Oz,” was introduced with a live production on Broadway starring Stephanie Mills. Subsequently, a film adaptation starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson was released soon after in 1978.
“The Wiz” is now being adapted by Atlantic Community High School’s International Thespian Troupe 2609 and will show on May 5, 6, 12, and 13.
The ACHS Drama production will be directed by Atlantic Community High School teacher, Julius Wynn, and will be the first live musical at the school in more than five years.
The cast and production for “The Wiz” includes students from grades 9 to 12.
“This show is timeless and inspiring. It’s all about finding your own “home”, which ultimately lies within. It’s the journey to find one’s inner strength and confidence to deal with the pressures of the world around us. “The Wiz” challenges us to face our fears and believe in ourselves. And when you believe in yourself, anything really is possible. This is the message I hope students and audiences take away from the show,” said Wynn.
The production of “The Wiz” will be performed in the Auditorium at Atlantic Community High School, 2455 West Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33445. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children (4-17) and can now be purchased at https://atlantichighchool.seatyourself.biz.
