Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Where will the temporary school be located while the new Melaleuca Elementary is being built?
Melaleuca students will temporarily be housed at a specially-built holding school located on the campus of Crestwood Middle School. The buildings include classrooms, fine arts classrooms, cafeteria, and main office. In addition, 11 classrooms in the main building directly adjacent to the temporary holding school will be utilized for Melaleuca students.

    2. Where is Crestwood Middle School located?
64 Sparrow Dr., Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411

    3. Can I send my child to a different local school?
Although a formal Reassignment cannot be approved on the basis of the temporary housing of Melaleuca on the campus of Crestwood Middle School, you are eligible to apply for a school of your Choice through the District's Controlled Open Enrollment process. Starting April 4, 2022, you can log in to www.mypbchoiceapp.com and follow the directions on applying to a school through Controlled Open Enrollment. You will have the option to select as many schools as you wish.

Student selection is lottery-based so feel free to select as many schools as you would like a chance in attending. If assigned a seat at one of the selected schools, parents will be responsible for transporting their child to that school, as bus transportation is not provided for students who attend a school through the Controlled Open Enrollment assignment process. Parents can also submit a late Choice application if one was not already submitted by the January 28, 2022 deadline. To submit a late Choice application, visit www.mypbchoiceapp.com.

    4. Can I drive my child to and from school?
Yes. Parents who wish to transport their child to and from our MES campus, located at Crestwood, can do so. However, we are strongly encouraging parents to use District-provided transportation.

    5. How long will this project take?
The remodel of Melaleuca will begin immediately following the end of the 2021-2022 school year. The school will be rebuilt during the 2022-2023 school year. The plan is for the new Melaleuca Elementary to open in August 2023. Therefore, the project will take one full year.

    6. I am worried about my child going to a middle school environment. Will the students be with the middle school students?
The students will still be attending and participating fully in the Melaleuca Elementary School environment. The students are not attending the middle school. Melaleuca will have a cafeteria, fine arts classes, and classroom spaces dedicated to our elementary students. We will continue to operate as a fully-functioning elementary school.

The vast majority of our MES students (especially primary students) will be located in the temporary buildings that are physically separated from the middle school buildings. Our oldest students will be housed in a section of one of Crestwood’s main buildings that is dedicated to our elementary students. We fully plan to maintain our school-wide expectations and environment.

    7. Is transportation available for students?
Yes, the Palm Beach County School District provides transportation for students who live two or more miles away from the school. All of our students who currently ride a bus will continue to be eligible for a bus. The students who normally walk or are driven to school, and live within our Melaleuca attendance boundaries, will now be eligible for transportation as well.

    8. Is locating the school on the site of Crestwood Middle School the only option?
Yes. It was necessary to find a site with a large enough area to accommodate the temporary school.

    9. What will the school hours be during the 2022-2023 school year?
The elementary school hours will remain the same. Students will begin arriving at 7:30 a.m. Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. Dismissal begins at 2:05 p.m. The middle school hours are different (9:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.). Therefore, our arrival and dismissal times will not overlap.

    10. When will we find out about the available bus stops?
The transportation department will distribute bus stop locations in early May. This information will be sent out to parents as soon as we receive it.
