Dr. Emmanuel Alvarado Biography & Presentation
The presentation will center on the rich history of the Jewish population in Argentina from the Inquisition to modern times. It will highlight the various contributions of the Jewish population in Argentina, and by extension, to Latin America. It exemplifies the way in which existing curriculum on Latino studies can be enriched.
Dr. Emmanuel Alvarado received his PhD in Comparative Studies with a concentration in Hispanic Studies from Florida Atlantic University. Currently, Dr. Alvarado works as professor of Spanish and Sociology at Palm Beach State College. He has published numerous articles and presented various conference papers in the fields of Sociolinguistics and Hispanic Studies. Some of his publications include ‘Mexico’s Poor: Contextualizing Poverty and Inequality in the Post-NAFTA Years’, published in the Delaware Review of Latin American Studies. Subsequent articles include ‘Attitudes Toward Immigrants and Multiculturalism in Contemporary America: The Role of Foreign Language Fluency’, published in Sociation Today as well as ‘Intimacy, migration, and cultural change: Latinos and American Fertility.’ published in Revista de Estudios Sociales. More recently, Dr. Alvarado has co-authored Intimacies and Cultural Change (2014, Routledge) as well as Transnational Popular Psychology and the Global Self-Help Industry (2016, Palgrave).
Hybridity in Latino Culture and Identity: The Heritage and Contributions of Jews in Argentina
The presentation will center on the rich history of the Jewish population in Argentina from the Inquisition to modern times. The presentation will highlight the various contributions of the Jewish population in Argentina, and by extension, to Latin America. The presentation exemplifies the way in which existing curriculum on Latino studies can be enriched, expanded, and intertwined with other ethnic/cultural groups. Lastly, the presentation will also highlight the hybrid and non-monolithic nature of Latino identities.
