Nury Castillo Crawford Biography

Nury Castillo Crawford is the mother of three sons, life-long educator, CEO/Founder of 1010 Publishing and a published author. She was born in Peru, South America and emigrated to the United States when she was ten years old. She attended Florida A&M University, where she attained both her B.S. and M.S. degrees. Her publishing house, 1010 Publishing specializes in disseminating literary creations in a bilingual format. As the CEO/Founder of 1010 Publishing she connects diverse writers with readers of all backgrounds. She knows the importance of representation and equity in resources for all. Nury is an advocate for literacy, understanding that literacy is one of the most important variables that can predict one’s success in life.

In addition, Nury is currently a Director of Academic Support for Gwinnett County Public Schools, where she has broken ground by implementing a Hispanic Mentoring Program, the first of its kind in the school district. In this role, her focus is to support Latino/Hispanic students, build background knowledge, self-esteem, and ultimately graduate from high school with post K-12 career / college options. In this program monthly events are held that focus on literacy, STEAM, and cultural awareness for the middle school students. The high school students engage in empowering sessions in college readiness, entrepreneurship and licensed professions. Their annual 3 week summer camp and parent empowerment conference are two signature events. Students also receive free academic tutoring, school supplies, holiday gifts, and field trips to colleges and local cultural arts places.

She is the published author of several books, most recent is “What’s Going on in the World?” a bilingual children’s book that helps sort out the current world pandemic and helps empower children on what they can do to keep themselves and loved ones safe. Other titles include the Sofia Series: “3,585 MILES TO BE AN AMERICAN GIRL “ and “ SOFIA & VIVI: BIG SISTER” these are stories that capture the journey of a little immigrant girl, school, family and perseverance in a new country. “PLANT THE SEEDS WELL… EXPECT WONDERS” focuses on the empowerment of parents by providing them with tips and strategies on how to support their children. This book is available in English and Spanish (dual language formats).

Nury has won multiple awards including 50 Most Influential Latinos in GA three consecutive years and has been named and or nominated for Educator of the Year via various organizations both statewide and nationally. Nury advocates for both children and literacy while engaging with non-profit and community organizations by helping create safe learning environments such as community libraries, author visits, virtual read alouds, and the implementation of literary activities in community after school /summer school programs. Her most recent community projects include launching a free library space with computer/internet access and books for children to use as needed in a highly populated shopping center in the heart of Lilburn, GA. In this same shopping center Nury is looking to open a small bookstore, “THE little BOOK SPOT- a multilingual bookstore” where the focus will be to have books written by authors who mirror our community’s diversity in race/ ethnicity, culture and language. Nury has engaged and connected with readers and educators across the country presenting and keynote speaking at conferences and events.
