AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

  • AVID is currently offered at 66 sites in the School District of Palm Beach County. Each site has a coordinator who is responsible for recruitment and implementation of AVID or the AVID Elective.

    AVID's Mission
AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness in a global society.

    What is AVID?
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a kindergarten through postsecondary college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and in their lives beyond high school. Today, AVID is implemented across the globe.

    AVID Elementary
AVID Elementary is a foundational component of AVID College Readiness and is designed to be embedded into the daily instruction of all elementary classrooms across entire grade levels to maintain schoolwide structures.

    AVID Secondary
AVID Secondary affects the entire school system by transforming the instruction, systems, leadership, and culture. The core of AVID at the high school and middle school level is the AVID Elective class, where students who are enrolled in a school’s most rigorous classes, such as AP, AICE, IB, or Dual Enrollment, receive support. The AVID elective class is taught during the regular school day by a trained AVID teacher. The goal of AVID at the secondary level is to ensure college readiness for all AVID elective students and improved academic performance for all students based on increased opportunities. AVID Elective teachers provide academic training, manage tutorials, work with faculty and parents, and help students develop long-range academic and personal plans.

    AVID Schoolwide
AVID Schoolwide transforms the instruction, systems, leadership, and culture of a school, ensuring college readiness for all students. Schoolwide student achievement results from the professional learning experienced by subject-area teachers, counselors, administrators, and district administrators-and especially through the success of the students targeted for the AVID Elective. Use of AVID methodologies, such as Focus Note-taking and group collaboration, in all classes helps create a college-going culture across the campus.

AVID Excel – College Readiness for English Learners
English Learner College Readiness (ELCR) was developed to fully address the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) throughout the AVID System. This program is intended to accelerate academic language acquisition and increase students’ access to the AVID Elective and college preparatory courses and is currently available at Boca Raton Middle School.

    The AVID Student- Student Learning
AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. Potential AVID students must choose to participate and demonstrate this choice by completing the application and participating in the interview process. If selected, AVID students enroll in rigorous classes and in the AVID Elective class, where they receive academic support. In addition, the AVID student must demonstrate good behavior and attendance.

    The AVID Parent
AVID parents are part of the journey too! We ask our AVID parents when possible to participate on an advisory board and in AVID site team meetings and maintain regular contact with the AVID coordinator. Many parents and students participate in AVID Family Workshops. AVID parents are part of the journey too!

    The Results
Various state-funded, independent research together with AVID’s own data, validate that the AVID college-readiness system works. Regardless of life circumstances, AVID students overcome obstacles and achieve success. AVID students graduate and attend college at higher rates, but more importantly, they can think critically, collaborate, and set high expectations to confidently conquer the challenges that await them. In 47 states across the U.S., K-16 educators are driving student success through engaging, rigorous, and student-centered learning environments.
