Band

  • The Independence Middle School Eagle Band is one of the largest and most active middle school band programs in Palm Beach County. We have been recognized as one of the outstanding middle school band programs in our state and country.

    We offer four levels of band classes at IMS based on grade level, maturity level, and musical ability: Beginning Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. These classes teach students how to play one (or more) of the following instruments: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion (including Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Xylophone, and other auxiliary percussion instruments). Students who already know how to play String Bass can also participate in our band program.

    Our students participate in District Solo and Ensemble Festival, All-County and All-State Bands, and district and national music festivals. We also offer Jazz Band and Drumline “clubs” outside of the school day. Students learn LIFE skills: teamwork, dedication, determination, artistic creativity, social skills, and leadership skills, plus they make lifelong friendships!

    Our Director of Bands since 2010 is Mrs. J. Christine “Chris” Murray. Mrs. Murray attended Jupiter Middle and Jupiter High schools and the University of Florida, and she has been a music educator for more than 35 years.

    Sign up for our OPTIONAL Early Bird Instrument Fittings and Beginning Band Round Up at IMS to get a jump on next year! 2023 fittings are scheduled for 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4. Music professionals will help your incoming student find an instrument that “fits” them. Beginning Band Round Up, scheduled for 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Saturday, April 15, will teach students the “basics” for their instruments.
